Association of public versus private health care utilization and prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis in Maringá, Paraná, Brazil
Thursday, February 26th, 2009Conclusions The prevalence of Trichomonas spp. was low and stable in both populations in the 4 years, indicating an equilibrium in terms of numbers of this agent in
Maringá, Paraná, Brazil. The results corroborate the hypothesis that SES may influence the epidemiology of trichomoniasis.
The prevalence of the infection increases with age, a phenomenon not observed with other sexually transmitted infections,
such as gonorrhoea or Chlamydia trachomatis.
Alternative Approaches to Partner Notification, Diagnosis, and Treatment: Pharmacists’ Perspectives on Proposed Patient Delivered Partner Therapy in New York State, 2007.
Thursday, February 26th, 2009Surveys of New York State Pharmacists find that 63% support use of patient delivered partner therapy, and 78% do not want a behind the counter status for Chlamydia antibiotics.Page: 178DOI: 10.1097/OLQ.0b013e31818eb73cAuthors: McNutt, Louise-Anne PHD *; Davis, Christopher F. Expression of secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor and elafin in human fallopian tube and in an in-vitro model of Chlamydia trachomatis infection
Thursday, February 26th, 2009CONCLUSION
These data suggest that SLPI and elafin have a role in the innate immune defence of the Fallopian tube in infection and ectopic pregnancy. Their role is likely to include regulation of protease activity, wound healing and tissue remodelling. Pharmacokinetics of EDP-420 after Ascending Single Oral Doses in Healthy Adult Volunteers.
Sunday, February 22nd, 2009Authors: Jiang LJ, Wang M, Or YS
EDP-420 (EP-013420, S-013420) is a first-in-class bicyclolide (bridged bicyclic macrolide) currently in clinical development for the treatment of respiratory tract infections. It has good pre-clinical pharmacokinetic properties across multiple species and potent in vitro and in vivo activity against respiratory tract infection pathogens, including H. Influenzae, atypicals (e.g., Chlamydia pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Legionella pneumophila), and multi-drug resistant streptococci. The safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of an orally administered EDP-420 suspension in 40 healthy adult subjects were assessed in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, ascending single-dose study. Eligible subjects were sequentially randomized into on…

In vitro activity of iclaprim and comparison agents tested against Neisseria gonorrhoeae including medium growth supplement effects.
Sunday, February 22nd, 2009This study was conducted to determine the activity of iclaprim compared with trimethoprim and other commonly prescribed drug classes against a comprehensive collection of 156 Neisseria gonorrhoeae, including subsets of organisms resistant to beta-lactams and fluoroquinolones (>60%). Iclaprim (MIC(50/90), 4/8 mug/mL) was 16-fold more potent than trimethoprim (MIC(50/90), 64/>64 mug/mL), and medium growth supplements did not adversely influence activity. Lack of cross-resistances for iclaprim with other commonly used therapies could make iclaprim an alternative for several sexually transmitted diseases (gonococci, Chlamydia trachomatis).

Throat infection, neck and chest pain and cardiac response: A persistent infection-related clinical syndrome
Sunday, February 22nd, 2009Summary Dizziness, chest discomfort, chest depression and dyspnea are a group of symptoms that are common complaints in clinical practice.
Patients with these symptoms are usually informed that while neurosis consequent to coronary heart disease is excluded nonetheless
they remain unhealthy with no rational explanation or treatment. 165 cases of these symptoms and 85 control subjects were
reviewed and underwent further medical history inquiry, routine EKG test and cardiac ultrasound examination. Thirty-five patients
received coronary artery angiography to exclude coronary heart disease. Serum myocardial autoantibodies against beta1-adrenoceptor,
alpha-myosin heavy chain, M2-muscarinic receptor and adenine-nucleotide translocator were tested, and inflammatory cytokines
and …
